CBU issues apology for honorary degree recipient comments

Cape Breton University has issued a public apology for remarks made by an honorary degree recipient during a recent speech to a graduating class. In his speech, Rev Norman MacPhee made a reference about the residential school system while speaking about a school he established in Honduras in the 1960s. In a statement, CBU acknowledged the good intentions behind “speaking about supporting young women in Honduras,” but asserted that there is “nothing about residential schools to be celebrated” and that “even the words ‘residential schools’ carry a deeply painful legacy.”
