Opinion

In a recent CTV News article, several members of the Canadian postsecondary sector respond to the University of Michigan’s decision to transform some first-year classes into pass-fail courses as part of a pilot program. University of Toronto OISE PhD Candidate Susan He said that while the move might initially help students ease into university, students still need other mechanisms to help them study, make friends, and build a support network. Dr Tyler Black, a psychiatrist affiliated with the University of British Columbia, said that students may shift their stress to their regular courses. High school teacher Michael Zwaagstra commented that a better approach would be to ensure that high schools adequately prepare students for university.
