A new private postsecondary school called the Guru Nanak Institute was officially launched in Surrey, British Columbia to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 550th anniversary. GNI is an online-only institute, according to Surrey Now-leader, which focuses on being an “academic environment for research and teaching on Sikh philosophy, history, literature, culture, and devotional music in an interdisciplinary manner.” The school will offer three programs: the Sikh Studies Diploma, Punjabi Studies Certificate, and a Gurmat Music Diploma. Students will gain a variety of skills through the programs, including proficiency in reading and writing Punjabi, an understanding of Sikh ethos, and knowledge of the Sikh spiritual hymn singing tradition. GNI has plans to build a campus in BC and to expand its curriculum in the future. Vancouver Sun| Surrey Now-Leader Note: Archived stories may contain dead links or be missing source links.
