In a recent article for Inside Higher Ed, Sylvia M Burwell discusses how addressing some of higher education’s common challenges may require more of a sector-wide approach. Burwell argues that those in higher ed must focus more broadly than the institution or program level to consider comprehensive solutions when discussing the future of the sector. The author argues that this approach is necessary because of fluctuations in the economics of higher education and the changing marketplace. Burwell recommends that institutions place students and research at the centre, approach the sector systematically and differentiate from one another based on their strengths, and engage with the community to truly become inclusive.
