How to help students strengthen writing skills: Opinion

Opinion

Professors should integrate writing instruction into their courses to help students improve their writing abilities, writes Steven Mintz. Mintz discusses how professors can learn from AI and machine-learning powered essay autograders to create a road map to lead students through the writing process. This road map includes discussing writing genres, writing an effective introduction, refining a thesis statement, explaining evidence used in essays, taking opposing points of view seriously, using transition words and phrases well, and creating an effective conclusion. The author also recommends that professors have their students write frequently, hold discussions on effective writing, and provide students with as much timely feedback on writing as possible to help them improve.
