Institutions participate in Giving Tuesday to raise funds for students through matched donations, challenges

Postsecondary institutions in Canada are participating in Giving Tuesday in a myriad of ways today. 10 Atlantic institutions, including Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University, joined with J&W Murphy Foundation to support the Food Security Project, which provides students with the food they need to thrive. Memorial University announced that it would be matching donations up to $50K to support the new Thriving Student Fund. Algoma University similarly called on the public to give toward a newly established Student Relief Fund that would help students pay for transportation and housing needs, childcare support, food costs, and more. The Canadore Foundation is raising funds to assist 21 Canadore College students who have been identified as being a single credit shy of graduation. The University of Waterloo launched a variety of targeted challenges that would allow additional funds to be “unlocked” if enough funders donated to certain initiatives. Vancouver Island University launched a campaign aiming to raise $350K for students through initiatives such as the Give a Meal program and an emergency bursary fund.
