International scholars cite safety, research climate as reasons for moving to Canada

News

Several scholars who have come to Canada under the federal government’s global research programs have shared their stories on why they have opted to move north. Philip Zamore, who is headed to McGill University, was one of several US-based scholars to express frustration with the anti-science climate in the US and its impact on research and recruitment. “I cannot do my best work in America,” said Zamore. Philosophy scholar Talia Bettcher—who will be studying gender-based violence prevention at the University of Waterloo—said that she “wanted to get someplace safe” after not feeling safe in Los Angeles.
