Managing accommodation requests from students: Opinion

Instructors should consider how they will manage accommodation requests from students in a streamlined and compassionate way, writes Regan A R Gurung. Gurung writes that students are exhausted and stressed, which may result in more students than typical requesting accommodations. The author recommends simplifying the accommodation process by using a “CCOMFE” (compassionate, clear, organized, multifaceted, and engaging) approach, and encourages instructors to be clear about allowances and assignment policies, discuss any changes to policies in class, and create a common email response for all requests. Gurung also recommends considering class size when deciding on allowances and making late submissions possible for students.
