NOSM U, Wikwmikong Tribal Police partner on training program for Indigenous police services

NOSM University has partnered with Wikwemikong Tribal Police to develop a trauma-informed, culturally relevant training program for Indigenous police services. The program will focus on fostering community resilience; provide officers with training on trauma responses; and create Anishinaabe wellness support for officers, first responders, and victims. “There is a need to understand how Anishinaabe language, culture and the land can support healing and wellness in the justice sector,” said NOSM U Professor Dr Marion Maar. “We intend on collaborating with Anishinaabe language speakers and knowledge keepers to create culturally-based and trauma-informed responses to improve wellness of victims and officers.” The project is funded by over $1M in funding from the Government of Ontario.
