The Government of Québec has passed Bill 83, which requires doctors to work in the province’s public health network for at least five years after completing medical school. The law is meant to improve access to health care for people in Québec by preventing new doctors from exiting the public system for the private sector. Under Bill 83, new doctors who want to practice in the private sector or outside of the province will incur a financial penalty. Discussion of the bill previously drew comment from the Université du Québec, which called on the provincial government to support the institution’s family medicine program. This program aims to instill public health values in the next generation of doctors.
