Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus and several culturally significant spaces on campus were given Indigenous place names in a ceremony on Wednesday. The Burnaby campus will now be called xʷtatəl̕ləm ʔə ƛ̓ səltaɬ sme:nt (learning place) in Halq’eméylem and Xwta7ltáw̓txw tl’a Lheḵw’lhúḵw’aytn (learning house) in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh. SFU Indigenous executive lead Chris (Syeta’x̱tn) Lewis (Squamish Nation) said that the naming process started over 10 years ago. “To be able to have the acknowledgement and recognition of the naming project, makes us visible again on our own lands,” said SFU Elder in residence Syexwáliya (Ann Whonnock), from the Squamish Nation.
