The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear an appeal from the Mohawk Mothers group regarding a ruling in August 2024 related to McGill University’s construction work on the grounds of the former Royal Victoria Hospital. The group of Indigenous Elders suspects that there are unmarked graves of Indigenous patients located on the grounds. In 2023, the Mohawk Mothers and McGill negotiated an agreement to have a panel of archaeologists oversee the renovations; however, in 2024, the Québec Court of Appeal overturned a court decision that ordered compliance with the agreement. The group was seeking to appeal the provincial court’s decision.
