UAlberta receives $3M for compute vault initiative

News

The University of Alberta recently received $3M from the Government of Canada to establish the Canadian AI Compute Vault (CAICV). The initiative will help address a current critical issue where Canadian tech companies need to depend on foreign “hyperscalers” such as Google Cloud and AWS—which are bound by the US CLOUD Act—to process data. The CAICV will operate strictly under Canadian law, provide the high-performance virtual machines necessary for Canadian higher ed to build advanced AI models, and reduce the cost to entry for Canadian small and medium-sized businesses.
