The University of Alberta recently received $3M from the Government of Canada to establish the Canadian AI Compute Vault (CAICV). The initiative will help address a current critical issue where Canadian tech companies need to depend on foreign “hyperscalers” such as Google Cloud and AWS—which are bound by the US CLOUD Act—to process data. The CAICV will operate strictly under Canadian law, provide the high-performance virtual machines necessary for Canadian higher ed to build advanced AI models, and reduce the cost to entry for Canadian small and medium-sized businesses.

In a recent article for University Business, Alcino Donadel highlights the growing push for computing power on campuses across the United States. AI and advanced analytics are placing a demand on institutional energy and servers that their current infrastructure is not designed to support, Donadel explains. As a result, several institutions have begun constructing data centres or partnering with industry to find ways to secure the hardware they need for the future of research. Donadel concludes by noting the opportunity that this moment presents for institutions to move from fragmented technology environments to a centralized computing infrastructure that serves multiple research groups simultaneously, reduces redundancies, and encourages collaboration.

Brandon University’s Board of Governors has reportedly approved 4% and 6% tuition increases for the 2026–2027 academic year for domestic and international students, respectively. The domestic tuition increase is the maximum increase permitted by the Government of Manitoba. BrandonU VP Administration and Finance Peter Hickey told the Brandon Sun that the increase is necessary given rising costs in the areas of inflation, staffing, maintenance, and program delivery. While Brandon University Students’ Union president Tosin Salau recognized the financial pressures facing the university, he argued that placing the burden on students was not the answer. “Students want to see more investment in education from the government rather than putting more pressure on students to pay more every year,” he said.
