UBC launches food prescription program with gift from RBC

News

The University of British Columbia has received a $3.5M gift from the Royal Bank of Canada that the university will use for three food security initiatives. The funds will be used to support sustainable agricultural training through the UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture and new Online Practicum; support the BC Food Web hosted by UBC’s Centre for Sustainable Food Systems; and to launch a food prescription program in the Fall. The food prescription program will operate out of UBC’s Gateway Health Building. Under this program, students who are identified by health and wellness services as being at risk of food insecurity will be able to receive a personalized food prescription from a clinician and be connected to campus food supports.
