Understanding educator, learner perspectives to improve the use of analytics in learning: Study

A study published by Tracie Farrell, Harith Alani, and Alexander Mikroyannidis in Teaching in Higher Education explores the potential of learning analytics and the level that analytics must reach to become a meaningful tool for mediating learning. The qualitative study draws on interviews and focus groups with educators and learners to identify key challenges that they face in online learning, develop an understanding of how these groups recognize learning in themselves and others, and identify the strategies they employ to improve learning. The authors conclude by making several recommendations for creating learning analytics that can have an impact on mediating learning, such as drawing on a wide variety of indicators and providing interactive dashboards to learners and educators alike.
