Western launches Memegwaanh Indigenous Learning Honour

Western University has launched a new initiative that will recognize students’ work towards Truth and Reconciliation on their transcripts. The Memegwaanh Indigenous Learning Honour will provide students with formal recognition for engaging in academic coursework and extracurricular activities related to Truth and Reconciliation. The initiative encourages students to recognize and build respect for Indigenous cultures and histories, engage in on-campus and community Indigenous initiatives, and develop an understanding of Indigenous knowledge and Truth and Reconciliation. The honour will marked be on students’ official transcripts once they graduate. “By adding an informal learning requirement… we’ve broadened the way students can learn, which is an important step towards broadening their horizons and Indigenizing our understanding of what constitutes higher education,” said Western AVP (Indigenous Initiatives) Christy Bressette.
