Researchers from Western University and Wilfrid Laurier University are collaborating on a pan-Canadian research project that will investigate the health benefits associated with parks and protected areas. The project is led by Western Human Environments Analysis Lab Director Jason Gilliland and WLU John McMurray Research Chair in Environmental Geography Chris Lemieux. Gilliland and Lemieux will focus on understanding the impact of parks and protected areas on health and will study how engagement with and access to parks can be increased. “We have built a cross-sectoral collaboration that involves academics from universities coast to coast to coast, all levels of government, non-profits, community groups, and industry that will have meaningful impacts on understanding and communicating the value of [these areas] for health and well-being,” said Gilliland.
