York University has announced that it will now be giving its students, staff, and faculty digital YU-cards. All incoming students will be given a digital card, while those who currently have a physical card will be given the option of switching to mobile cards when they renew their cards. “Mobile YU-cards create an important sense of identity and pride as a member of the York community, while being more efficient and cost effective,” said YorkU Interim Assistant VP, Ancillary Services Tom Watt, who noted that the digital cards will eliminate lost card replacement fees. Students who do not have a compatible smartphone will still be able to receive plastic cards at no cost. YorkU says that it is the largest Canadian university to transition to a mobile credential program.
