AB launches Rural Health Action Plan to improve access to rural, remote health care

The Government of Alberta is introducing the Rural Health Action Plan to improve access to health care in rural and remote communities. The plan includes a $16M Rural and Remote Family Medicine Resident Physician Bursary Pilot Program, which offers bursaries of $125K (rural stream) or $200K (remote stream) to medical students from the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary who are completing or will complete a family medicine residency. Recipients must commit to providing patient care in eligible rural or remote communities for three years post-residency. Additionally, a $600K Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Education Grant program will help communities with emergency medical services stations recruit and train local workers.
