Coalition issues joint statement expressing concern about antisemitism at UBC

A coalition of Jewish organizations has issued a joint statement expressing that they are “deeply alarmed by the sharp rise in antisemitic incidents at the [University of British Columbia].” According to the Canadian Press, the statement highlighted the appearance of antisemitic graffiti, a smear campaign targeting Jewish faculty members, and the promotion of disinformation by a student club. The Vancouver Sun reports that a group of students has also taken responsibility for vandalizing a building that was set to host a three-day workshop led by a scholar from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The university contacted police immediately upon the discovery of the vandalism and the event was hosted at a different location. “As [UBC President Benoit-Antoine Bacon] has repeatedly stated since last November, hate and discrimination have no place at UBC and every reported incident will be taken very seriously,” stated UBC spokesperson Matthew Ramsay.
