The Government of Canada has released the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, which outlines immigration targets for the next three years. The projected number of new permanent residents will be reduced from 485,000 to 395,000 in 2025; permanent residency processes will prioritize applicants who are already in Canada as temporary residents, who are Francophone, and/or who can work in key sectors such as the health and trades. Temporary residents are included in the plan for the first time and, starting in 2025, Canada will have targets for the number of new workers and students arriving in the country. Canada outlined the measures being taken to reduce the temporary resident population to 5% of the country’s overall population, including the international student cap, Post-Graduation Work Permit Program reforms, and temporary workers reforms.

Lethbridge Polytechnic recently unveiled a new visual identity that recognizes the institution’s transition to a polytechnic. The polytechnic’s new logo reflects the landscape of southern Alberta, and is surrounded by a teepee ring to symbolize inclusivity. Leth Polytech says that the transition between blue and green represents changes in society, the economy, and student needs, as well as the institution’s responsiveness to these changes. “This transition represents the spirit of innovation, collaboration and community that runs through everything we do,” said Leth Polytech Board Chair Michael Marcotte. The institution also published a new video ad on Youtube establishing its identity as a polytechnic.

A group of University of Calgary students and local high school students are calling on the Government of Alberta to implement stronger restrictions on vapes. The group—named Stop Addicting Adolescents to Vaping and E-cigarettes (SAAVE)—is comprised of 38 health science undergraduate students and high school students who are trying to tackle youth nicotine addiction. They are petitioning AB to take three measures: Ban all vape flavours aside from tobacco, ban the sale of single-use vaping devices, and require retailers to stock vaping products behind the counter. The Calgary Herald reports that two MLAs have expressed support for the behind-the-counter requirement while four MLAs have explicitly opposed the changes.
