McMaster University, Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, and York University have joined the University of Waterloo and University of Guelph in pulling course room locations from public-facing webpages. The CHCH reports that Carleton University, Trent University, Western University, and Wilfrid Laurier University are currently reviewing their safety practices, which could result in course information being removed from the public domain. “These classes [that explore social and gender issues] have become a lightning rod in terms of hate and online extremism,” commented Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations President Nigmendra Narain. “We all want to go in positively looking forward to the great experience for students and faculty, not having to worry about security measures when we go into the classroom.”

CTV News reports that the University of Regina’s Pride Centre (UR Pride) is preparing to file a lawsuit at a Court of King’s Bench over a new Government of Saskatchewan policy regarding student names and pronouns. The new policy requires parents of children under the age of 16 to give consent to schools if the child wants to change their pronouns or name. UR Pride has requested that the province suspend the policy; if it does not, UR Pride will ask the court to grant an injunction that will keep the policy from coming into effect. Bennett Jensen, director of the advocacy group that is co-representing UR Pride, said that the policy violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Two recent articles in touch on the way assessments can be used to improve student affairs departments. Daniel Bureau (Louisiana State University) describes assessment as a “framework [“¦] to continually ask how we can do better” and become more effective as a department. He recommends taking the time to define and prioritize the most important outcomes for the assessment and encourages a process that involves working with other units and drawing on assessment practices from other sectors. Erin Milne (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) and Jeannette Smith (MCLA) offer their college as a case study in student affairs assessment and discuss the high-impact processes that have been implemented as a result of assessment practices.
