The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario has published a case study on a City of Hamilton initiative to support international students as they transition into the labour market. After the Canadian Bureau for International Education discovered that international students faced several challenges in the local job market, Hamilton, its postsecondary institutions, and community organizations responded with the launch of a variety of supports. These included co-op and experiential learning programs, mentorship and networking events, and large-scale job fairs. The city is also developing a pilot program called the Hamilton Workforce Ready pilot program that will streamline career services and targeted supports for international graduates. HEQCO states that this collaborative approach serves as a transferrable model for smaller and northern communities.

A committee of citizens have reportedly renewed their efforts to call for a name change at the Université de Moncton by proposing the creation of an official commission. This commission would be composed of representatives from the university and the broader Acadian community, and would evaluate a potential name change for the institution. The group has also proposed two actions: the use of an alternate name such as the “Université Acadian” to refer to the institution in the interim and the addition of a statement to land acknowledgements indicating the connection between the name of Moncton and British officer Robert Monckton. The university has reportedly not responded to the committee’s invitation to discuss the creation of a commission.
