Louis Riel College celebrated the official opening of its first campus this week. Located on the ground floor of the Manitoba Métis Federation’s (MMF) building in downtown Winnipeg, the campus offers courses in health care and Indigenous-focused early childhood education. “This campus represents more than just a building – it represents opportunity,” explained MMF Minister of Education JoAnne Remillard, adding that LRC has plans to expand its on-campus offerings.

York University has received $55.8M in support for its new medical school from the Government of Ontario. This funding will support planning and operations for the York School of Medicine, including its accreditation, curriculum development, faculty recruitment, and program costs. The school is anticipated to open in 2028 with an initial 80 undergraduate seats and 102 postgraduate seats. “This will be a school where physicians are trained for the health system Ontarians need,” said YorkU Interim President Lisa Philipps. “Together with our hospital and other health care partners, we are building a community-based model of medical education that will expand access to care.”

Dalhousie University and Mount Allison University have formed a five-year articulation agreement for those seeking a Bachelor of Engineering from Dal. Eligible students who complete their first year in an approved MtA program will be able to transfer into Dal’s Bachelor of Engineering program with advanced standing. After admission to Dal, Dal will oversee placement of students into engineering disciplines. “This agreement gives students the opportunity to begin their university experience at Mount Allison while building a strong academic foundation for continued study in engineering,” explained MtA VP Academic Dr Richard Isnor.

Northern College has received a $5M investment from Discovery Mining Ltd through a new collaborative partnership. Of the investment, $3M will go towards Northern College’s Sports Dome, transforming it into a year-round recreational facility that the community can use. In honour of the investment, the dome will be renamed the Discovery Fieldhouse. The remaining $2M will support the development of an Environmental Technician Program which will launch in Fall 2027. The funding will support program development, delivery, and sustainability; modernize lab facilities; create scholarships and student placements; and more.

As prospective business students increasingly focus on outcomes, business school rankings are no longer the whole story, but merely the start, according to Nalisha Patel (Graduate Management Admission Council). Patel points to a recent GMAC study showing that while student research into business school rankings dropped, research into ROI and career outcomes climbed. Using this evidence, she argues that business schools should “treat rankings as the beginning of a conversation,” with information like employment and salary data being used to convince prospective students of their value. “[T]he schools that will stand out aren’t those with the highest ranking – they’re the ones that can tell a prospective student exactly what the degree did for someone like them,” concluded Patel.

In a letter to the editor published by Sudbury.com, members of the Terminated Faculty Committee of Laurentian University call for an inquiry into the university’s use of the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) during its insolvency crisis. The calls come in response to the conclusions of Laurentian University President Lynn Wells’ “listening tour,” which were reported in late June. In the letter, the committee calls for “an acknowledgement of the harm” done by the university’s former administrators, a public inquiry into the causes of the CCAA, and the sharing of the total costs of the CCAA process.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s proposal for the development of a new student housing building has received approval from the Surrey City Council. This eight-storey building will include 201 units with a total of 359 beds, a cafeteria, and a dining hall. It will provide students with affordable housing that is at least 10% below market rate, and will focus on prioritizing access for students who face barriers to securing housing, including students with disabilities, Indigenous students, and former youth in care. “It addresses the need for safe, secure and affordable housing for students attending KPU,” said KPU Director of Planning, Development and Sustainability Chani Joseph. “Living on campus will help students stay connected to their studies, peers and support services.”

McMaster University has received a $4.6M investment from the Government of Ontario for the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. These funds will be used to increase the reactor’s production of medical isotopes, which are used to fight cancer. The investment aims to bolster ON’s position as a nuclear medicine innovation leader and support the economy. “We welcome these additional resources from the Province of Ontario, and we embrace the opportunity to use them to enhance our production of medical isotopes,” said McMaster President Susan Tighe.

Students at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology recently spoke to the Winnipeg Free Press about the challenges with how their institution’s closure is being handled. Students explained that they feel that they are not being given what they were promised. “Now, it’s like ‘MITT is closing, let’s just get this done and over with,’” said MITT student Kieran Smith. MITT Executive Director of External Relations Alyson Pile said that these concerns have now been addressed and students have been reassured they will be able to complete their programs as expected.

The Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières has partnered with Chambre de commerce et d’industries de Trois-Rivières (CCI3R) to support organizations in Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec with their cybersecurity needs. Through this initiative, 15 organizations, including small- and medium-sized enterprises, non-profits, and municipalities, will receive financial support that will cover costs related to training employees to address cyber threats through UQTR’s FORCE-UQTR program. This 14-week program uses an online, asynchronous format to teach participants about vulnerabilities, protection measures, and digital resilience. In addition, the partnership will provide financial support that will offset a portion of trainee salaries.
