Research Nova Scotia is awarding $27M to community health-care projects through the Focused Research Investments (FRI) initiative. Three of the projects involve postsecondary institutions: Cape Breton University will receive $12.4M to help rural aging Nova Scotians live at home longer; Dalhousie University will receive $6.5M to study youth mental health and addictions care and $1M toward a collaboration with Community Interest Company that will address local issues by providing community resources. “The researchers funded through FRIs are driven to search for answers to some of Nova Scotia’s most urgent questions, devoting their expertise in service of their communities,” said Research NS CEO Stefan Leslie.

Several postsecondary institutions have appeared among the 2025 Alberta’s Top Employers listing. The competition evaluates employers from across the province according to criteria such as workplace, benefits, and community involvement. Five postsecondary institutions appeared on the final list of 85 employers: Bow Valley College, MacEwan University, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and the University of Calgary. “To achieve our vision […], we rely on having faculty and staff who can share their passions and bring their best to their roles,” said MacEwan President Dr Annette Trimbee.

Earlier this week, several postsecondary institutions marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day. They honoured the victims of the Holocaust and Nazism on January 27—the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp’s liberation. McMaster University lit its University Hall with yellow lights and the University of Winnipeg lowered its flags and reaffirmed its commitment to countering all forms of racism and hatred. The University of New Brunswick held a workshop led by Atlantic Canada Holocaust Education Foundation Founder Jasmine Kranat. The University of British Columbia shared details of an upcoming archive collection that is being developed by the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre and the UBC Library. The University of Waterloo highlighted Professor Robert Jan van Pelt’s role in a Royal Ontario Museum exhibition titled “Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away.”

Red Crow Community College has become the newest member of Colleges and Institutes Canada. CICan highlighted the college’s programming in agriculture, teacher education, and Indigenous mental health and identified its research specializations in areas such as Blackfoot language revitalization, reconciliation in higher education, and mental health and wellness. “[Red Crow’s] membership will strengthen our network’s collective efforts to advance reconciliation,” said CICan. “We look forward to collaborating with [Red Crow] and our other members to co-create initiatives that promote increased Indigenous representation and participation in postsecondary governance, research, and education.”

Laurentian University will lead a climate change adaptation project in collaboration with First Nations communities. The project has received $546K in funding from the Government of Canada’s Climate Change Adaptation Program. Laurentian Up North on Climate Lead Chantal Sarrazin-Delay explained, the university will partner with four Northern Ontario Tribal Councils to conduct community-based climate change risk assessments and adaptation planning. “Together, we are creating an online resource and micro-credentials to share the impacts of climate change on First Nation communities” said Chantal Sarrazin-Delay. “The GeoHub will feature accessible, dynamic story maps highlighting community experiences and adaptation ideas, blending Indigenous and Western knowledge to build resilience.”

The University of Saskatchewan recently made two partnership announcements. The university’s Crop Development Centre (CDC) received a renewed commitment of $11.8M from the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC), which will be used to develop new wheat cultivars with strong agronomics and improved resistance to common diseases. Meanwhile, USask’s Edwards School of Business is collaborating with the Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC-Canada) to prepare Bachelor of Commerce graduates for the Certified Management Consultant designation. USask Edwards students will gain access to a variety of free resources offered by CMC-Canada, including networking events, educational programs, and mentorship opportunities.

The Government of Ontario is investing $27M in two initiatives that will boost carpenter training. The first initiative will enable the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA) to expand four existing training facilities—located in Cambridge, London, Ottawa, and Windsor—and create a new facility in Sudbury. The second initiative will support the expansion of the UBCJA’s Carpenters’ Regional Council Workforce Development Program. “In the face of tariff threats to Ontario workers and jobs, it’s more important than ever that we keep investing in our workers, so they have the skills and training they need to succeed,” said ON Premier Doug Ford.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has received $2M from the Yuel family in support of the Joseph A Remai Saskatoon Campus. To acknowledge this gift, Sask Polytech will establish the Yuel Family Collaborative Learning Space, which will provide students and staff across disciplines with a gathering place and study hub. The polytechnic will also recognize PIC Investment Group—led by Greg Yuel—by adding ClearTech Industries’ logo on water stations at the Saskatoon Campus.

Seneca Polytechnic has launched a new brand campaign with the tagline “This is Seneca Polytechnic.” Seneca VP of Strategy and Brand Renata D’Innocenzo said that the tagline helps answer the question: “Why Seneca?” The campaign defines how polytechnic education is different and showcases possible careers for polytechnic graduates. It uses a storytelling approach that Seneca calls “bold, differentiated and authentic,” featuring the stories of five graduates who highlight how their polytechnic education has benefited them in their chosen careers.

Acadia University and Yukon University have signed an articulation agreement to enhance study options for earth sciences students. Through this partnership, eligible graduates of YukonU’s Earth Sciences program can transfer all their courses to Acadia. This will allow them to enter into the third year of Acadia’s Bachelor of Science program in either the Geology or Environmental Geoscience stream. “This agreement will provide excellent options for YukonU students to complete their undergraduate experience, and our programs will be enriched by the experiences and perspectives they bring to the Acadia campus,” said Acadia Associate Professor Dr Deanne van Rooyen.
