Capilano University celebrated the opening of its first on-campus student housing building on its North Vancouver Campus this week. Treehouse (Lam̓íwa / θqétəw̓txʷ) accommodates 362 students and contains a mixture of single, double, and accessible units. The building’s dining hall is connected to the housing building, feeding students, faculty, and off-campus students. “This new student housing at Capilano University will give students a supportive place to live, study and build community, while making it easier for them to access the education and opportunities they came here to pursue,” explained Government of British Columbia Minister of Infrastructure Bowinn Ma.

Durham College has launched its Equipped campaign to raise funds for the college’s capital equipment. The college has set a $15M funding goal, with the intent of supporting initiatives across all of the college’s nine academic faculties. Durham began the campaign by hosting two alumni guest speakers who shared stories of the educational value provided by access to equipment during their studies. “We know that when students have access to the right tools, environments, and support, they can thrive and succeed,” explained Durham President Dr Elaine Popp.

The University of King’s College has officially exceeded its goal for the Welcoming: The Future King’s campaign. The campaign was launched in 2024 with the goal of raising $15M to make the institution more welcoming and accessible to students from all backgrounds. The three areas of focus for the campaign were: empowering student success and access, expanding and diversifying the educational experience and enhancing excellence and the cultural life of King’s. In total, the campaign has raised $16.2M, which has been directed toward awards and scholarships, experiential learning opportunities, infrastructure, and more.

Lakeland College will be expanding and modernizing its agricultural training, thanks to a more than $7M investment from the Government of Alberta. The investment will support upgrades and the expansion of the college’s beef yard, which holds a growing cow population, as well as the relocation and upgrading of Vermilion campus’s horse pens. Lakeland President Dr Alice Wainwright-Stewart called AB’s support “instrumental” in improving the college’s student-managed farm lab, adding that the investments will provide students with “the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead the future of agriculture while supporting innovation and growth across Alberta’s ag sector.” Construction on the projects is expected to begin in July, finishing in 2028.

In a recent article for the Toronto Star, Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano (Toronto Metropolitan University) discusses the impact of AI and automation on perceptions of the value of a university degree. While questions circle the value of higher ed, she explains, government and industry leaders are making decisions about the future of work. To underscore the importance of that decision-making process, she asserts that at universities, “students cultivate the skills and mindsets that shape societies and future-proof careers: critical reasoning, ethical judgment, creativity, collaboration and communication.” She concludes by stating that the future of Canada and technology will depend on the leadership of today’s graduates.

Laurentian University is reportedly taking steps to address the lingering effects of the university’s insolvency proceedings. “What surprised me the most was just how raw the emotion was for some people. [… T]hey’re still really feeling the effects of what happened five years ago,” said Laurentian President Lynn Wells, who met with more than 100 members of Laurentian’s community about their concerns. Wells has reportedly outlined 14 action items for the institution that include the creation of an advisory committee, giving staff and faculty voting seats on the board, improving workloads, and working with deans to provide students with more flexible learning opportunities.

In her article for University Affairs, Donna Trembinski (St Francis Xavier University) explains the importance of educators instilling an “attitude of constant skepticism and analysis” in students when it comes to AI. Trembinski explains how she developed an assignment where students were to use AI to create a map of ancient trade routes. Despite the maps being geographic “disasters,” 75% of students “didn’t even glance at what the AI produced.” Trembinski extended this to say that if students do not question clearly inaccurate information, they will be unable to find subtle errors introduced by AI. To combat this, Trembinski says AI literacy needs to be taught to both high school and university students.

Olds College has reached out to Mountain View County’s council to request that the county contribute $500K over five years to the college’s modernization campaign. The college’s trades modernization campaign is focused on transforming the college’s aging trades facilities into a state-of-the-art learning hub with expanded capacity, flexible learning environments, and advanced technology integration. Olds VP of Research and External Relations Todd Ormann explained that the investment from the county would have direct local returns and would also help the college to leverage matching funds from provincial and private partners.

The University of Guelph’s Board of Governors has approved $10M in funds to support the initial phase of construction for the institution’s 78 College Ave student residence project. The project will bring 1,250 on-campus beds to campus for first-year undergraduate students. With this approval, the initial phase is expected to begin on July 6th with topsoil removal, excavation, and underground service relocation. The building is scheduled to open in time for Fall 2029, according to Guelph Today.

In an effort to protect student emails from being compromised, Athabasca University has announced that it is introducing multi-factor authentication for all students. AU noted that the traditional username and password model lacked sufficient security due to low quality and reused passwords. Students will now need to use an additional method such as an authenticator app, SMS, or a phone call to access their accounts.
