A recent special report published by the Auditor General of Ontario has identified several issues with commercial truck driving training and licensing in Ontario. The auditor general’s investigation uncovered situations where career colleges failed to deliver the mandatory training, falsified or altered student training records, or failed to maintain records. The ON ministries responsible for training and transportation were also found to have inadequate inspection practices and monitoring processes in place. The report states that ON had never inspected 54 of the 216 registered private career colleges offering Entry Level Training (ELT) and was not monitoring the training outcomes of ELT providers. “We need to make sure as a government that we’re training people correctly,” said Auditor General of Ontario Shelley Spence.

The University of Alberta is establishing the Grassland Learning and Knowledge Hub, a hub dedicated to conserving Canada’s grasslands. UAlberta researchers will collaborate with three partner groups: the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and the RAD Network. The researchers will explore the factors that influence landowner decisions related to converting or keeping grasslands. “It’s collaborative; it allows for local perspectives to be heard,” said UAlberta Augustana Campus Adjunct Professor John Pattison-Williams. Pattison-Williams explained that the hub will enable different sectors to “come together to consider the financial, cultural, spiritual and policy aspects of grasslands conservation.” The hub is supported by $4M from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund.

Canadore College has announced that it will be closing its West Parry Sound campus and laying off employees in response to financial pressures. Canadore President Sandra Efu claimed that while the college’s voluntary retirement packages lessened the financial strain faced by the college, further workforce reductions are required. “These are not decisions we make lightly,” said Efu. “They are necessary to ensure we are focusing our resources where they can have the greatest impact and to ensure Canadore remains strong, sustainable, and responsive to student and labour market needs into the future.” The college says that students at the West Parry Sound campus will be supported through graduation and will be able to complete their programs at the campus.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Adler University have signed a partnership that will expand graduate-level opportunities for KPU graduates. The pathway will allow graduates of KPU bachelor’s programs to pursue master’s and doctoral programs at Adler in five areas: clinical psychology, counselling psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, art therapy, and psychology of health and wellness. Students who meet the entrance requirements will also receive expedited admission to programs at Adler’s Vancouver campus. “By establishing a clear and accessible pathway to graduate studies at Adler, KPU graduates are able to continue their academic journeys and prepare for careers that drive meaningful change in their communities,” said KPU Associate VP, Academic pro tem Dr Amy Jeon.

St Clair College, SANS Institute (SANS), and siberX have partnered to launch a cybersecurity-focused executive education program called NOW // AI. This program will equip leaders to make quick decisions in crisis situations. Program participants will complete a full-day, instructor-led SANS war room situation in an interactive cyber-range environment. Leaders will practice making time-sensitive decisions in high-pressure real-world scenarios, and will earn a SANS × siberX badge and certificate upon completion. “It only takes one exercise for you to become an expert and certainly we want it to be on a proactive aspect as opposed to living the exercise in real time,” said St Clair President Mike Silvaggi.

The Government of Québec’s Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur recently expressed concern to cégeps about AI use in the province’s uniform French exams, according to a letter obtained by La Presse. The ministry said that it had uncovered an increase in elements that suggested the use of AI to complete the tests. However, after cégep administrators contacted officials, QC reportedly acknowledged an error in its initial assessment and asked educational institutes to intervene with students locally. Fédération des cégeps CEO Marie Montpetit stated that the confusion resulted in many students being unfairly accused. QC is currently working with cégeps to allow for submissions of qualitative evidence in the plagiarism cases, adding that a joint committee will convene shortly to establish processes to combat AI-related plagiarism.

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig has officially joined eCampusOntario. With this addition, eCampusOntario states that it now includes all of the province’s 58 publicly supported postsecondary institutions. “This membership enhances our ability to integrate digital learning with Anishinaabe ways of knowing, expand access to open educational resources, and strengthen pathways for our learners,” said SKG President Mary Wabano-McKay. “We look forward to contributing to and learning from a community dedicated to shaping a more accessible, responsive, and future-focused postsecondary system.”

Collège de Bois‑de‑Boulogne’s foundation and its continuing education department have signed a strategic partnership with La Guilde du jeu vidéo du Québec, a key member of the Québec video game industry. The collaboration will see the two organizations establishing a scholarship program. The Bourses d’études La Guilde du jeu vidéo du Québec scholarship program will offer $500 scholarships to two students enrolled in the college’s Programmeuse ou programmeur de jeux video certificate program. The initiative reaffirms the partners’ commitment to supporting the next generation of talent.

Instructure, the parent company of the Canvas learning management system, has reached an agreement with ShinyHunters, the hacker group responsible for the recent cybersecurity breach of Canvas. Instructure said that the affected data was returned and ShinyHunters asserted that it had deleted its copies of the data and will not further target or contact Instructure or its customers. K-12 Dive reports that Instructure appears to have paid an undisclosed sum, and that cybersecurity experts say that agreements with cybercriminals cannot guarantee the deletion of data.
