The Université de Sherbrooke has received a $10M donation to support metabolic brain health research. This donation from businessman and philanthropist Eric Sprott will be used to accelerate the work of USherbrooke Professor Stephen Cunnane, who focuses on brain energy metabolism and neurodegenerative diseases. Research will focus on understanding the links between glucose, insulin, and ketones with the aim of finding ways to prevent cognitive decline in aging populations.

Western University’s Ivey Business School has received a total of $8M from Ivey family members Rosamond and Richard Ivey. The funds will be used to create the Chair in Leader Character at the Ian O Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership, create the Richard W Ivey Family Chair for AI in Business, and provide research and postdoctoral fellow funding. “AI is going to impact the entire world, for better or worse,” explained Richard of the chair for AI in business. “A big chunk of that will be business.” Rosamond also made a $500K donation to the university’s unrestricted Western Fund.

Collège Ahuntsic’s Regroupement innovant pour l’impression d’immeubles durables (RI³D-FRQ) will receive more than $2M over the next three years to accelerate 3D construction technology adoption in Canada’s construction industry. The investment—which comes from the renewal of funding from the Fonds de recherche du Québec and RI³D-FRQ’s partners—will allow RI³D-FRQ to better showcase the performance of 3D-printed elements, strengthen its permanent laboratory, and expand its research network throughout Canada.

The University of Lethbridge is launching a Master of Arts degree in Fine Arts Multidisciplinary. Students will learn about intersections between creative arts practices, reflect on practices, and consider factors that shape artistic expression. This course-based program is research-intensive and includes a capstone project. “By bringing different artistic perspectives into their studies, the program encourages students to make new connections, explore creatively, and develop a deeper understanding of their own practice,” said ULethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts Associate Dean Dr Bryn Hughes.

The University of Prince Edward Island Faculty of Medicine’s Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC) has received provisional accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This accreditation recognizes that the CLSC meets internationally established standards related to its quality, safety, education, operations, and continuous improvement. “For us, it’s about creating a culture of professionalism that is unmatched,” said CLSC Medical Director Dr Ron Siemens. UPEI says that this centre is one of only four in Canada to hold this accreditation.

Confederation College and Avalon Advanced Materials Inc have formalized a partnership that will support skilled workforce development. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Confederation will work with Superior Lithium to develop workforce training, education, and career pathways to prepare workers to operate a proposed lithium refinery. Opportunities will specifically focus on Indigenous learners. “This collaboration provides an opportunity to align education and training with emerging workforce needs while helping learners develop the skills, experience, and connections necessary to pursue rewarding careers in the region,” said Confederation AVP, Workforce Development Carol Cline.

The Student Association of Practical Nurses—representing students at the Centre for Nursing Studies—has reportedly voted 98% in favour of joining the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). A ratification vote in November will officially create CFS Local 117. VOCM states that membership will provide nursing students with access to CFS membership benefits, such as its national health and dental plans. Additionally, the new union will join the federation in its advocacy efforts. CFS described the vote as “historic” as it brings all public postsecondary students in Newfoundland and Labrador under the union’s umbrella.

The plan outlines how the institution will support physical and psychological wellbeing; recruit, develop, promote, and retain people from diverse backgrounds; strengthen relationships and collaborative communities; and encourage experimentation. There are 12 initiatives across these pillars that are intended to create meaningful, measurable impact. “These pillars demonstrate the care we have for one another, for the students whose success we inspire, and for this community we call our own,” said BCIT VP People, Culture, and Inclusion Chris Hudson.
