In a recent article for University Business, Robert Goodwin explains how intentionally created student housing can help combat student burnout. Goodwin highlights several design elements that improve student housing infrastructure. Incorporating daylight into residence halls can improve mood, sleep, and cognitive performance, while ensuring the location of informal communal spaces fosters connection can help students decompress and find peer support. For graduate students, the author explains that privacy and respite are essential, as some students have unusual schedules due to the nature of their studies. “If student success and retention are tied to wellbeing, then residence halls are not peripheral assets,” argues Goodwin. “They are central infrastructure.”

A recent article from The PIE News provides responses to the Center for World University Rankings Global 2000 rankings released earlier this year. The article interviewed LCI Education Senior International Officer Isaac Garcia-Sitton, who said that these rankings indicate that while Canadian education is still of a high quality, other countries are “investing fast, planning more deliberately and treating higher education as a strategic national asset.” University of Toronto Associate Professor Elizabeth Buckner agreed that the rankings show that universities in Canada are “under tremendous pressures” rather than indicating a sector-wide decline in Canada.

Faculty and staff who were laid off during Laurentian University’s insolvency in 2021 have received their reduced severance. These creditors have received 25% of their claims, with withholdings deducted. Laurentian University Faculty Association President Fabrice Colin said that former employees waited five years for these cheques, which represent “the last and final step of that painful process.” “This is yet another illustration of the fact that the CCAA process was entirely ill-suited to universities, and fortunately enough no university in the country will be subject to that process in the future,” said Colin.

The University of Northern British Columbia has partnered with the District of Lake Country to offer residents support reducing wildfire risk through a student-led program. UNBC students work with the district’s Planning and Development department, providing participants with a wildfire self-audit toolkit that will help them assess their structures and learn about what is recommended based on FireSmart BC principles. “This project is about helping residents be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to wildfire risk around their homes,” said UNBC undergraduate student Curtis Huppee. “By participating, residents can better understand wildfire risk around their properties, identify actions they can take today, and contribute to research that may help support more wildfire-resilient communities across BC.”
